What Is The Criterion Collection?
Founded in 1984, American home video distribution company The Criterion Collection, Inc. (otherwise known simply as Criterion) is known for its licensing of so-termed ‘important classic and contemporary films’. They primarily focus on film restoration, using the commonplace letterbox format for widescreen movies, whilst also including a variety of bonus features and commentary tracks.
In the earliest days of The Criterion Collection, the company prevalently released art, genre, and mainstream movies. But it has since expanded to world cinema, obscure movies, and mainstream classics - such as The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and The Third Man (1949).
Due to the company’s niche appeal, it has come to attract a loyal fanbase of film fanatics, making hard-to-find classics accessible and incentivising collectors with its range of special editions.
In fact, The Criterion Collection is regarded as a pioneer of the ‘special edition’ DVD concept, providing a variety of bonus features on top of their high-quality film restorations: documentaries, deleted scenes, trailers, commentaries, alternate endings, etc. This has now become commonplace amongst new film releases.
