A Return to ’50s Fashion

The first instalment in the Back to the Future franchise, directed by Robert Zemeckis, arrived at cinemas in 1985. It became an instant critical and commercial success, and this warranted the development of further sequels, which were released in 1989 and 1990, respectively.

Following a teenager called Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox), the first movie sees the character unwittingly travel to 1955 using a time machine designed by his friend Emmett ‘Doc’ Brown (Christopher Lloyd), who is killed during the present day. Marty, out of his depth, is dismayed when he realises that there isn’t enough plutonium — the power source of the converted DeLorean — left to allow a return trip, so he concocts a plan to convince a younger Doc to help him. The pair surmise that the only way for Marty to return home is to harness the charge of a lightning bolt scheduled to strike the local courthouse. Unfortunately, events have already escalated, Marty having altered the flow of time when he interrupted his parents’ first encounter, and he must set things right by catalysing their relationship; otherwise, both he and his siblings will be erased from existence.

Back to the Future Part II continues Marty’s adventures, with Doc convincing him to travel to the future so as to prevent his son from being imprisoned. The third entry picks up immediately after the conclusion of the second, taking Marty to the Wild West, where Doc has been trapped. Like their predecessor, these films were positively received by general audiences and critics.
