Defining Superhero Cinema

Released in 2012, Avengers Assemble successfully brought together a plan long in the making, featuring an ensemble team-up never before seen in the realm of superhero cinema.

Spearheaded by Marvel Studios president and creative genius Kevin Feige, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) began in 2008 with the cinematic debut of Iron Man (a film starring Robert Downey Jr.). From this starting point, multiple films would be released based on characters from Marvel Comics, including Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Captain America (Chris Evans), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth).

With an expansive universe firmly established and multiple critical hits under the Marvel Studios belt, it was time for the next step – the activation of the Avengers Initiative.

Built up through a series of post-credit scenes featuring Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the Avengers are eventually called to action following a devastating attack on a S.H.I.E.L.D base by the Asgardian Loki (Tom Hiddleston). Stealing a powerful object known as the Tesseract, the trickster seeks to usurp the Earth and become its rightful king – having previously lost the trone of Asgard to his older brother, Thor.

By turning the Avengers against each other, he almost succeeds. However, after the death of Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg), they learn to put their differences aside and work together.

Composed of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), they manage to defeat Loki’s alien invasion force and save the planet in what would come to be known as the Battle of New York.

The plot elements raised in Avengers Assemble would eventually go on to culminate with Avengers: Endgame, a conclusion to what is known as the ‘Infinity Saga’, which was 21 films in the making.
