Comic Book Origins

Based on the comic book of the same name, first published in January 1999, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is the much-anticipated heroine-focused movie from the DC Universe.

The franchise features the eponymous girl gang, who are now led in the cinematic adaptation by the harlequin of Gotham, Harley Quinn.

When it comes to charisma, Harley Quinn has it in buckets. She has become one of the most popular super-villains in the DC Universe since her debut in the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, an Arkham Asylum psychologist who fell in love with her then-patient Joker and became his partner in crime/love interest.

However, her on-again-off-again relationship with the Joker isn’t her only hobby. The clown-princess of crime also hangs out with the Suicide Squad and Gotham’s travelling sideshow, the Gotham City Sirens.

Her versatility, unpredictability, and charm have meant that Harley has become one of the most recognisable supervillains in comic book history. Although the Harley Quinn comic book character is more violent and less humorously eccentric than the animated series and film versions, Quinn’s character is just as electrifying on the big screen.

Big-Screen Adaptation

The Birds of Prey film is a standalone movie continuing with the arc of Harley Quinn first established in Suicide Squad (2016). And the Birds of Prey cast is equally as thrilling as the film itself!

In addition to returning Australian actress Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the Birds of Prey movie also features Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask.

Since the events of Suicide Squad (2016), Harley Quinn and Joker have split up. The narcissistic Black Mask (a.k.a. Roman Sionis) and his zealous right-hand Zsasz place a hit on a young girl named Cassandra Cain.

In response, Gotham City descends into complete chaos as everyone tries to pin her down. Harley joins forces with Dinah Lance (Black Canary), Helena Bertinelli (Huntress), and Renee Montoya. This formidable foursome vow to protect the girl and bring down the iron-fisted crime lord themselves.
