Excelsior

Born in 1922, Stan Lee is best known for his work on Marvel Comics. Acting as a writer, editor, publisher, and producer, he helped create many of the most popular Marvel characters (alongside other collaborators, such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko): Spider-Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, the X-Men, Thor, Black Panther, and more.

His early career began in 1939 when he became an assistant at Timely Comics, a publishing company that would eventually evolve into Marvel Comics during the ‘60s. Though his early responsibilities were humble — charged with modest tasks, which included filling inkwells for artists — Lee managed to work his way up the ranks to interim editor and ultimately took on the role of publisher.

After his retirement from Marvel, Lee continued to be heavily involved in various superhero franchises, making cameos in different film and TV adaptations. He is perhaps best recognised for appearing the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), where his roles became more prominent and prolific.

Before his passing in 2018, Lee received a number of acknowledgements for his work. Notably, he was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall Of Fame in 1994, the Jack Kirby Hall Of Fame in 1995, and received the NEA’s National Medal Of Arts in 2008.
