A Ledger Of Red

On the pages of the comics, Natasha Romanova / Black Widow first appeared in Tales Of Suspense #52 (1964), wherein she was depicted as a villain to Tony Stark / Iron Man. Her origins reveal that she grew up in the U.S.S.R, during which time she took part in the ‘Black Widow Ops’ program, a secretive contingency that trained orphan girls to be masters of combat and espionage. The program gave its participants certain physical enhancements, such as an increased lifespan, and attempted to remove any modicum of self-determination by means of implanting false memories. With loyalty established, agents would carry out important missions on behalf of the Soviets, setting aside any sense of morality.

Everything changed for Natasha when she encountered Clint Barton / Hawkeye, whose help she solicited to take revenge against Iron Man for his part in a previous altercation. The pair developed feelings for each other, and after the purple-clad archer joined the Avengers, she was able to complete her defection, becoming a hero in her own right.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Natasha (played by actor Scarlett Johansson) and Clint (Jeremy Renner) are similarly connected, though their relationship is platonic. The former was introduced in Iron Man 2 (2010), acting as Tony’s assistant on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D., a covert government agency. Later movies saw the character drafted into the Avengers, for whom she fought against various world-ending threats. Unfortunately, her career as a superhero was cut short in Avengers: Endgame (2019), the character giving her life to retrieve a powerful item known as the Soul Stone.

Despite Natasha’s final moments being revealed in Endgame, she helmed a solo film in 2021, which also brought the arrival of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), her adopted sister, who would assume Natasha’s identity after her death.
