DC Comics, a company founded in 1934, is a market leader in the comic-book industry, having published thousands of issues. Over the years, they have spawned some of the most popular superheroes in pop culture, many of whom are household names: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Martian Manhunter, Green Arrow, Shazam, Green Lantern, Cyborg, Booster Gold, Doctor Fate, Deadman, Firestorm, Hawkman, Captain Atom, and Beast Boy — amongst others. Naturally, these forces of good often encounter their villainous counterparts, examples being the Joker, Deathstroke, Lex Luthor, Bane, Sinestro, Darkseid, General Zod, Doomsday, Brainiac, Gorilla Grodd, Black Manta, Captain Cold, and Black Adam.

Expanding into other forms of media, these characters have appeared in numerous films and TV series. These range from self-contained projects, such as director Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy and Smallville, to interconnected universes, which are apparent in the CW’s Arrowverse and the big-screen DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

The DCEU, capitalising on the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), began with the release of Man Of Steel (2013), a movie by director Zack Snyder. Actor Henry Cavill starred as Clark Kent / Superman, and other prominent members of the Justice League — DC’s headlining superhero team — subsequently joined him: Bruce Wayne / Batman (played by Ben Affleck), Diana Prince / Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Barry Allen / the Flash (Ezra Miller), Arthur Curry / Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and Victor Stone / Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
