The First Chapter In The Skywalker Saga

Released in 1999, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace marked the landmark return of the fan-favourite science-fiction franchise, the previous film (Episode VI – Return Of The Jedi) having made its debut in 1983.

Taking place decades before the original trilogy, this new entry focuses on a young Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jin (Liam Neeson). The pair are sent to negotiate with the Trade Federation, which has blockaded the planet of Naboo and is preparing to invade, but their efforts are futile. The Sith Lord Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid) manipulates events, instructing that the Jedi be executed.

Their mission failed, the two Jedi rescue Queen Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) and attempt to reach Coruscant, the capital of the Galactic Republic. Unfortunately, their ship is damaged during the escape, and they are forced to land on a desert planet known as Tatooine. It is here that they meet Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), a slave boy. Believing that Anakin is fated to bring balance to the Force, Qui-Gon liberates the child and takes him to be trained as a Jedi. However, Qui-Gon never sees this come to pass, as he is killed by Darth Maul (Ray Park), the apprentice of Sidious. In his stead, Obi-Wan assumes the role of teacher.

After the release of the film, it was followed by two direct sequels: Episode II – Attack Of The Clones (2002) and Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith (2005). These movies explore Anakin’s descent into the dark side of the Force and eventual rebirth as Darth Vader.
