The Adventure Begins

The character of Buzz Lightyear first appeared in the debut Toy Story movie (1996), wherein he was voiced by actor Tim Allen. Pixar’s hugely popular animated release presents the character as an action figure modelled after the in-continuity fictional hero of the same name, who exists in films and TV series. Despite his lack of flesh and blood, the self-proclaimed Space Ranger is entirely convinced that he is the real deal, which infuriates his fellow toy Woody (Tom Hanks), the pair both owned by a young boy called Andy Davis (John Morris). Nevertheless, the accessory-toting figure does eventually come to terms with reality, though it takes him breaking his arm to become accepting of the fact.

After four Toy Story instalments and a spin-off TV show, Buzz took centre stage for his own big-screen solo movie: Lightyear (2022). Telling the origin story of the character on whom the toy figures were based, the story follows this member of Star Command — now voiced by Chris Evans — as he attempts to return to his home after being stranded on an alien planet. Of course, this is easier said than done, for the experienced Space Ranger is confronted by all manner of threats, including the dreaded Zurg (James Brolin).
