Developed by Sega and published exclusively for the PlayStation 3, 'Yakuza: Dead Souls' is an incredible action-adventure game and the sixth instalment in the innovative and increasingly ferocious Yakuza series. Focusing on bloody rivalries between the different gangs and factions of the Japanese Mafia, the Yakuza series has always showcased plenty of aggression and gore. Dead Souls now introduces zombies to the tense fray, with the both feared and revered Yakuza now seen as the only hope of survival.
The game is set in the streets of the red light district of Kamurocho in Tokyo, where a zombie outbreak has taken hold, filling the gutters with carnage and death. The Japan Ground Self-Defence Force tried and failed to contain the outbreak, leaving the city to succumb to these flesh-hungry undead monsters. At the same time, Kazuma Kiryu returns to Kamurocho from Okinawa after receiving an ominous phone call from a mysterious man that says he has kidnapped Haruka, Kiryu's stepdaughter. The game is split into four chapters, each dedicated to one of the four terrorising characters, allowing you to play as Kazuma Kiryu (legendary former Yakuza boss), Shun Akiyama (elusive loan shark), Goro 'Mad-dog' Majima (feared insane Yakuza and pirate gangster of sorts), and Ryuji Goda (Dragon of Kansai). In this high-action, adrenalin-fuelled free for all, gun down the hordes of zombies whilst setting out to save loved ones and the remaining human citizens of Kamurocho in this undead apocalypse.
The district of Kamurocho, outside of the containment area, is still bustling with revenue and business, from the restaurants, hostess bars, casinos, and arcades, to the infamous 'happy ending' massage parlours. This allows for a great deal to explore and take part in, including golf and fishing, with plenty of mini-games and side missions to complement the original quest. Alongside the unforgivable swarms of wave upon wave of zombies you can find within the containment area, you will be challenged by gigantic, mega mutant bosses, complete with regenerating health and so much more to truly put your Yakuza skills and blood lust to the test. To help with the increasing number of zombies and difficulty, Yakuza: Dead Souls provides each character with different weapons, as well as a gun upgrade system and the option to buy new ones, so you can constantly improve and expand your artillery and arsenal as you progress throughout the game. The one thing you can fear more than zombies is the Yakuza.(Cat Emerson)
