The Smiths were the definitive British indie-rock band of the '80s, marking the beginning of the genre of guitar-rock that dominated the British charts well into the '90s.
Pop's most unlikely pairing, Johnny Marr and Morrissey conceived a flurry of melodic, three-minute pop songs and albums the provided the blueprint for British guitar rock in the following decade. The band split in 1987 and Morrissey and Marr have both gone on to pursue solo careers and collaborations.
