Dressed to Kill, 1980, Crime Mystery, 104 min **** A Brian De Palma directed slasher pick (slasher lite by today’s standards), Dressed to Kill, is perhaps more style than substance and is a little uneven in the acting performances, with De Palma’s then wife, Nancy Allen, getting both praise and criticism for her role as a prostitute targeted by a murderous woman. Performance wise, Michael Caine and Angie Dickinson are on firmer ground in their roles of a psychiatrist and a frustrated middle-aged woman, respectively. The cinemaphotography show cases typical de Palma direction, particularly the scenes that occur in an art gallery, where no dialogue is performed. There is a significant twist that I did see coming and I’ll let the viewer work out what other significant criticism the movie may have got (I don’t want to give away too much of the plot), apart from that of its violence and eroticism.
