After Eraserhead I was dubious of David Lynch’s other work but The Elephant Man is one of the all time great films no matter how bad Lynch’s first film was. The acting is so strong, John Hurt steals the show as Joseph Merrick and Hopkins also blows you away with his exceptional acting. The fact that the the film is based on true events brings a depth to the film that you don’t get with a story based on no truth what so ever, I can’t imagine what Merrick must have gone through with his disfigurement. As much as I think Eraserhead is terrible enjoyment wise I think it is worth watching before The Elephant Man as you can really see where David Lynch learnt his skills, I actually enjoyed comparing sound effects and shots between the two films and how it worked in this one and not in Eraserhead. Great transfer of the film I highly recommend this Blu Ray.
