What Is the Avatar Movie About?

Released in 2009, the first entry in director James Cameron’s Avatar movie series follows Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), a former United States Marine who agrees to join the Avatar Program, replacing his deceased twin. This program involves the piloting of hybrid bodies made from the combined DNA of a human and Na’vi, the latter of which is an alien species found on a moon called Pandora. With these bodies, operators are able to explore Pandora freely and interact more intimately with the natives, unaffected by the unbreathable atmosphere.

Though Jake is assigned the mission to gather intel regarding Na’vi society and their home, a large tree that rests upon a deposit of a mineral referred to as unobtanium, he comes to form a connection with the native people, particularly the female Na’vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). This fondness puts him at odds with the Resources Development Administration (RDA) and its head of security, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang).

13 years following the climactic events of the first Avatar movie, Cameron debuted its direct successor, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022). This sequel focuses on the return of the previously ousted RDA and Jake and Neytiri’s struggle to protect their family — including Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo'ak (Britain Dalton), Tuk (Trinity Jo-Li Bliss), Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), and Spider (Jack Champion) — from the hostile invaders, who are motivated by the ruination of Earth.
