One Of The Greatest Sequels Of All Time

Following the critical success of the first Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, director George Lucas made the decision not to take the lead on its direct sequel, The Empire Strikes Back. Outlining the plot from start to finish, he instead enlisted the talents of his former professor Irvin Kershner.

Released in 1980 (following A New Hope in 1977), The Empire Strikes Back picks up three years after the events of the first film, featuring a whole host of new and returning cast members: Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carries Fisher (Leia Organa), Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), David Prowse (Darth Vader – body), Kenny Baker (R2-D2), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Frank Oz (Yoda), and more.

Following the destruction of the first Deathstar, the Galactic Empire hunts the Rebel Alliance throughout the galaxy. And after tracking the rebels to the ice planet Hoth, Luke parts ways with his companions to find a Jedi Master by the name of Yoda on the planet Dagobah, after being instructed by the ghost of his former mentor, Ben Kenobi.

While on Dagobah, Luke trains with the Force, preparing for his inevitable confrontation with the Sith Lord Darth Vader. Meanwhile, the group led by Han Solo aboard the Millenium Falcon attempt to avoid the pursuit of various bounty hunters, including Boba Fett. This takes them to the cloud city of Bespin.

On Bespin, they meet Han’s old friend Lando, who betrays them to the Empire. Luke senses his friends are in danger and abandons his training to help them, confronting Darth Vader directly and discovering the truth that he is in fact his father.
