The Definitive Nintendo Console

In 1990, Nintendo released the Super Nintendo Entertainment Systems (otherwise known as SNES) in Japan and South Korea. The 16-bit home video game console featured advanced graphics and sound, outperforming many competing consoles of the time.

Thanks to its technological capabilities, the SNES received high critical praise and became the undisputed best-selling console of the 16-bit era – in spite of fierce competition from Sega’s Genesis console.

The SNES remained popular beyond its initial run, transitioning into the 32-bit era of gaming and selling a total of 49.1 million units prior to its discontinuation in the early 2000s.

Over the course of the console’s lifespan, there were a total of 1,757 games officially released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Such games included Super Mario World (1990), The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991), Donkey Kong Country (1994), EarthBound (1994), Super Metroid (1994), and Yoshi’s Island (1995) - many of which are regarded as some of the greatest video games every made.

To this day, the console remains a prized system for collectors and retro gamers, with Nintendo emulating the SNES for modern players – allowing players to capture the gaming experience using such rereleases as the Virtual Console, Super NES Classic Edition, and Nintendo Switch Online.
