Spanish Crime Drama
Money Heist is Spanish crime drama made for TV, known by its Spanish-language title ‘La casa de papel’ (directly translated to ‘The House of Paper’).
Created by Álex Pina, the series was initially supposed to be a two-part limited series. However, after running for 15 episodes on Spanish network Antena 3 in 2017, Netflix acquired the global streaming rights. Cutting the series into 22 episodes of shorter length, Money Heist was released in two parts over 2017 and 2018 before being renewed for another 16 episodes (which released as ‘Part 3’ and ‘Part 4’ in 2019 and 2020) - with a higher budget. A fifth and final part was ordered in 2020.
A documentary was later released, titled Money Heist: The Phenomenon (or ‘La casa de papel: El Fenómeno) involving the cast and producers.
The main cast includes Úrsula Corberó (Silene Oliveira/Tokyo), Álvaro Morte (Sergio Marquina/ Salvador "Salva" Martín/the Professor), Itziar Ituño (Raquel Murillo/Lisbon), Pedro Alonso (Andrés de Fonollosa/Berlin), Paco Tous (Agustín Ramos/Moscow), Alba Flores (Ágata Jiménez/Nairobi), Miguel Herrán (Aníbal Cortés/Rio), Jaime Lorente (Ricardo/Daniel Ramos/Denver), Esther Acebo (Mónica Gaztambide/Stockholm), Enrique Arce (Arturo Román), María Pedraza (Alison Parker), Darko Perić (Mirko Dragic/Helsinki), Kiti Mánver (Mariví Fuentes), Hovik Keuchkerian (Bogotá), Rodrigo de la Serna (Martín Berrote/Palermo), Najwa Nimri (Alicia Sierra), Luka Peroš (Marseille), Belén Cuesta (Julia/Manila), and Fernando Cayo (Colonel Luis Tamayo).
Money Heist (or La casa de papal) is based predominantly in Madrid, depicting the events as a man known as ‘the Professor’ recruits a group of eight individuals to enact a plan to rob €2.4 billion from the Royal Mint of Spain. To carry out their scheme anonymously, these eight individuals choose code-names inspired by cities - Tokyo, Lisbon, et cetera.
Inside the Mint, they take a total of 67 people hostage, with the plan being to print the money over the course of 7 days, all while repelling the elite police forces attempting to stop them.
Following the first heist, the group come out of hiding to tackle their next challenge: the Bank of Spain. As before, this follow-up heist puts them in contention with the local police as they take hostages.
