The Best Of Science Fiction

Created by author Frank Herbert in 1965, Dune is a science-fiction novel and an expansive media franchise. The novel is often regarded as the greatest science-fiction novel ever created, and it has received various awards, including the Nebula Award for Best Novel (1965) and the Hugo Award (1966).

In total, Herbert wrote five sequels: Dune Messiah, Children Of Dune, God Emperor Of Dune, Heretics Of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. Following his death in 1986, however, his son Brian Herbert and fiction author Kevin J. Anderson finished the final two entries in the Dune series (Hunters Of Dune and Sandworms Of Dune) and published a number of prequel novels.

There have been multiple adaptations of the first book, including a 1984 film (directed by David Lynch), a 2000 television miniseries (directed by John Harrison), and a 2021 film (directed by Denis Villeneuve). Additionally, the Dune franchise has spawned various traditional games and a series of video games.

The world of Dune is based thousands of years in the future. In this time, advanced space travel has been developed and humans have formed colonies on distant planets. Despite these advancements, so-called ‘thinking machines’ are prohibited, and anyone caught creating or being in possession of one of these machines can be punished lethally.

At the time of the first novel, humanity has expanded into an empire called the Imperium. This empire is run by the Great Houses. The planet Arrakis, also referred to as ‘Dune’, is a key location in the Imperium due to it being the only location wherein melange (‘the spice’) can be found. This drug extends life as well as enhances humans’ mental capacity, allowing them to perform complex calculations and travel between planets.
