The War For Humanity

The first entry in the series, Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), was developed by Bungie for Microsoft’s original Xbox console. In the first-person-shooter game, players assume the role of Master Chief/John-117 (voiced by Steve Downes), a super soldier who was created as part of the SPARTAN-II program. Alongside the AI Cortana (Jen Taylor), Master Chief explores a ring-shaped artificial world and fights against an alien empire known as the Covenant.

Bungie released two direct follow-ups following the debut of Combat Evolved. Unlike its predecessor, the second instalment presents two alternate perspectives on the war between humanity and the Covenant, allowing players to play as Master Chief and an Elite operating under the rank of Arbiter. The third game continues this plot thread, seeing the Elites partnering with their former United Nations Space Command (UNSC) enemies.

Eventually, Bungie handed over control of the franchise to 343 Industries, a studio created by Microsoft to oversee future development projects in this universe. Under their control, 343’s first independent game marked the beginning of the Reclaimer Saga, which also comprises Guardians (2015) and Infinite (2021).

In addition to the main entries, there have also been several spin-offs. Prior to Bungie’s separation from the franchise, they launched two more well-received games: ODST (2009) and Reach (2010). ODST was a dramatic departure from previous Spartan-focused titles, giving players control of the nameless Rookie, who is a member of the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODSTs). Reach, on the other hand, shifts the focus to a whole team composed of Spartan soldiers — Noble 6 (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez), Carter-A259 (Freddy Bosche), Catherine-B320 (Alona Tal), Jorge-052 (Hakeem Kae Kazin), Emile-A239 (Jamie Hector), and Jun-A266 (Sunil Malhotra) — and recounts the Covenant’s invasion of the eponymous planet.
