A Cursed World

A Japanese manga series created by Gege Akutami (writer and illustrator), Jujutsu Kaisen began publication in 2018. Originally, the manga was readable in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump (an anthology magazine), but it has since been collected in various tankōbon volumes, which are similar to Western trade paperbacks.

The series is set in a supernatural world where negative emotions cause its inhabitants to emit Cursed Energy. As the average person has no control over the release of said energy, this leads to the creation of Curses, monster-like beings that actively seek to bring harm to humanity. However, there are some individuals who possess the means to manipulate Cursed Energy: Jujutsu Sorcerers. Using Cursed Techniques, they can perform extraordinary feats, such as the advanced Domain Expansion ability, which allows the sorcerer to build a pocket dimension in which their offensive capabilities are greatly enhanced.

Assuming the starring role in the story is Yuji Itadori, a high-school student from Sendai. He becomes the unwitting host of a powerful Curse known as Ryomen Sukuna after his Occult Club friends attract the monsters by unsealing a talisman. Initially, both Sukuna and Yuji are required to be exorcised, but Satoru Gojo, a teacher of Yuji’s friend Megumi Fushiguro, intervenes when he sees that the boy has maintained control over his body. Gojo takes the possessed student to the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School, and the sorcerers plan to have Yuji consume all of Sukuna’s fingers so that the Curse can be eliminated for good.

Prior to the release of the manga, Akutami debuted a series titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School. Taking place before the events of the aforementioned series, this narrative was retroactively dubbed Jujutsu Kaisen 0.
