The Birth Of The Multiverse

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) made its triumphant debut in 2008, taking the world by storm with Robert Downey Jr.’s live-action portrayal of Tony Stark (also known as Iron Man). Since then, this world of heroes and villains has expanded exponentially, taking audiences to Wakanda with Black Panther and the far corners of space with Guardians Of The Galaxy. However, this was only the beginning.

Marvel Studios released What If…? in 2021, an animated anthology series that explores alternate realities via the multiverse. These realities differ from the core MCU in both minor and substantial ways, showing what would’ve happened if the films had played out differently. Narrating the series, the Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright) shows us a world where Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) took the Super-Soldier Serum and became Captain Britain, a world where Prince T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) was abducted by the Ravagers and took on the role of Star Lord, a world where the superheroes have become zombies, and more.

Created by A.C. Bradley and streaming on Disney+, What If…? adopts a cel-shaded animation style that brings to life new and existing characters. It also features many returning voice actors from the live-action MCU movies, such as Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barns/Winter Soldier), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye), Michael Rooker (Yondu), Josh Brolin (Thanos), and Tom Hiddleston (Loki) — amongst many others.
