‘When I Left You, I Was But The Learner’

Known for his intimidating presence and inspired design (conceptualised by esteemed artist Ralph Ralph McQuarrie), Darth Vader came onto the scene in 1977 as the main antagonist of director George Lucas’ Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Over the course of the trilogy, audiences would come to know Darth Vader as a three-dimensional character. This was made even more apparent with the critical revelation in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back where he reveals to the young Jedi Luke Skywalker that he is in fact his father, Anakin.

This reveal shook the foundations of what Star Wars was, leading into what would become a full redemption ark for the corrupted Anakin Skywalker. Throwing the evil Emperor into the belly of his own Death Star reactor, the scourge of the universe became the ultimate hero of the rebellion.

His origins would be later explored in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, where we saw Anakin Skywalker first join the Jedi Order as a young slave child and grow to become a full-fledged Jedi Knight. The final instalment, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, ultimately ended with his fall from grace as he transitioned from a noble hero of the Clone Wars into the dreaded Sith Lord Darth Vader.
