Not Your Usual Hero

Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Gaydos, Jessica Jones first debuted in Marvel Comics in Alias #1 (2001). In 2015, the character was adapted for Netflix and was the lead in her own show. Jessica Jones — as the series was named — takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the popular film franchise.

A woman imbued with superhuman abilities after a near-fatal car crash, Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) is a reluctant hero. She doesn’t fall into the archetypal role of a tights-wearing superhero, drinking heavily and opting to use her abilities for the purposes of private investigation.

In the first season of the show, the villainous Kilgrave (David Tennant) returns to torment Jessica once again. Previously, he’d held her captive using his mind control abilities. However, she managed to break free after being forced to kill someone innocent.
