The Legend of Aang

From 2005 to 2008, Nickelodeon aired three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender (named ‘Books’), presenting a fantasy world inspired by various elements of East Asian culture – taking other influences from South Asian, New World, and Sireniki.

The series begins over a century after the disappearance of Avatar Roku. Since his death and the disappearance of his successor, the world has been overtaken by the Fire Nation, led by their tyrannical Fire Lord.

Adhering to the pattern of the Avatar Cycle, Roku’s next incarnation is a young Airbender by the name of Aang. Afraid of his responsibilities, he ran away from his home upon his loyal flying bison, Appa, and was caught in the clutches of a violent storm. Plunging into the water, Aang entered the Avatar State (a way of channelling his past lives’ power) and became frozen in a large sphere of ice.

Uncovered by the Southern Water Tribe siblings Sokka and Katara, Aang must embrace his responsibility as Avatar, master the four elements, and save the Four Nations before the rise of Sozin’s Comet.

Along the way, Team Avatar (eventually composed of Aang, Sokka, Katara, Momo, Appa, Toph, and Zuko) adventure around the world, from the icy climate of the Northern Water Tribe, to the impenetrable city of Ba Sing Se, to the scorched lands of the Fire Nation.

Adaptations

In addition to the animated Avatar series, there was also a live-action film adaptation by director M. Night Shyamalan.

Furthermore, in 2018, it was announced that show creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko would be returning for another live-action take on Netflix.

The Legend of Korra

After the death of Avatar Aang, the cycle of reincarnation continued. Next in line was Avatar Korra, a girl from the Southern Water Tribe.

Unlike her predecessor, Korra was a natural prodigy capable of bending water, earth, and fire in her early youth.

Alongside a new Team Avatar (Korra, Mako, Bolin, Asami, Naga, and Pobu), Korra would face threats such as Amon, Kuvira, and Tarrlock.
