The latter of these starred in a 2019 solo outing that told the origin story of Gotham’s clown-faced criminal. Audiences discover that before his eventual turn to villainy, he was an aspiring comedian making a living as a clown, subject to the cruelty of the city’s indifference. After a series of misfortunes, violent attacks and verbal abuse, Arthur Fleck — the character’s real name — finally snapped, embracing his uncomfortable laughing affliction and adopting his infamous persona.
