Grand Master Of The Jedi Order

Yoda first appeared in 1980’s Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back, directed by Ivan Kershner. In this film, the young Force user Luke Skywalker was guided by the ghost of Ben Kenobi towards the swamp planet of Dagobah – where Yoda was in hiding following the rise of the Galactic Empire.

Here Yoda would impart his knowledge of the old Jedi ways to Luke, training him to go head-to-head with the Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Prior to the rise of the Empire, Yoda was the Grand Master of the Jedi Order. Over the course of his nine centuries of life, he oversaw the training of many a generation of Jedi Knights – including Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker.

However, he would be driven to flee after the initiation of Order 66 by Darth Sidious, which caused him to kill his clone allies in an act of self-defence, including Commander Gree. Along with Obi-Wan Kenobi (later known as Ben Kenobi), Yoda was one of the few Jedi to survive the purge, passing away due to natural causes in Return of the Jedi.
